As David stepped out on to the battle field to face a giant named Goliath, I’m sure that men in both camps felt that this youth, this shepherd was about to lose his life.
We have all heard the story of David and Goliath. From our youth, maybe from Sunday School, or VBS, we remember how the young shepherd who would be king faced and killed Goliath with only a sling and a stone. So why didn’t one of the seasoned warriors in Israel’s army rise to the challenge? Surly there was somebody more qualified than a shepherd for such an undertaking.
The problem that both Goliath and the Israeli army faced was placing faith in their own abilities. It was Goliath’s misplaced faith in himself that brought about his arrogance, ultimately causing his fall, and it was Israel’s misplaced faith in themselves that brought about their fear.
So what give David, the most unlikely victor, the ability to walk out on the the field of battle in a match between champions fearless? It all come down to where he placed his faith, In God. In 1 Samuel 17:37, David made it more than clear that God was where he placed his faith. It is only when we have faith that is properly placed in God that we have the ability to overcome the fears the world puts before us.
In our current society, we are facing several giants. Whether it be sickness, political unrest, or something on a more personal level, misplaced faith will almost always lead to fear. No matter what giant you are facing, placing your faith in the one true and living God, will always give you strength to face them without fear.
